Up All Night‘s Maya Rudolph doesn’t believe in Don’t-ing. We called her in her car to ask why.
GLAMOUR: Let’s get right to it: What’s your beef with Don’t-ing?
MAYA RUDOLPH: I don’t want to limit people. Lord knows I had what you could call many fashion Don’ts in my day. I used to watch Pretty in Pink and emulate Molly Ringwald’s outfits. One day it was a sailor cap and a weird old dress that dragged on the ground; another day it was something else crazy.
GLAMOUR: Please say there are photos.
MR: Oh, I’m sure somebody’s got to have some…somewhere.
GLAMOUR: You always seem to work with the funniest casts. What happens when the cameras aren’t rolling?
MR: On the set of [Rudolph’s new movie] Friends With Kids, Megan Fox introduced me to the Paris Hilton photo app, which is hilarious. You take a picture of yourself, and it Photoshops you in as Paris’ BFF. It was really fun.
UNIDENTIFIED VOICE: In one mile, bear left.
MR: I’m sorry. I’m driving! But yes, in one mile, bear left. That’s exactly what I wanted to say. Thank you, GPS lady!
GLAMOUR: Ha, good answer! What’s your favorite part of your job?
MR: I really love laughing. I like—
GPS LADY: Attention!
MR: Oh, just shut it down, woman! She wants me to take a detour, but I refuse. Anyway, laughing is my favorite part of what I do.
GLAMOUR: And what would you say is your least favorite part?
MR: Just the constant—
GPS LADY: Bear left.
MR: —the constant bearing left. No, it’s the constant beating myself up about not being with my children every second of the day while I’m at work.
GLAMOUR: But with three kids and a busy career, how do you find balance?
MR: I don’t think there is such a thing. It’s a wonderful goal, but I don’t do anything 100 percent anymore. I’ve told myself, That’s OK; do your best. If my time with my kids is shorter than it was yesterday, it’s better than nothing. But—
GPS LADY: Take the next left…. Please turn right!
MR: —but really, I just make it up as I go along. So far no one’s exploded…. And now I’m totally lost.
